Tasting @ Fonda Lola: Take Back the Siesta!

Who would want to go home straight after work when you can have a delicious Mexican meal at Fonda Lola? Definitely not me! I’m constantly craving Mexican food so when I was invited to sample items from their upcoming 2 day event – I jumped on the opportunity without hesitation.

For 2 days only (August 26 + 27, 2015), the Fonda Lola (@FondaLola) menu is being turned over to the restaurant owner’s mother to create and serve an authentic eight course Mexican meal featuring her specialities  and favourite dishes to feed a crowd. Passed down from generation to generation, these recipes are sure to give diners a true taste of Mexican culture and will take their taste buds through years of home-cooked tradition. At 65 years old, Vickie has had several years of practice to perfect the art of a pinch, dab and dollop to make each dish perfect in its delivery. Customers will be able to experience Mexican home-cooked cuisine like never before.

{Left} Tamarind Margarita ($14.00) – Citrus Margarita base & tamarind, so Mexican!!
{Right} Basil Mojito ($13.00) – Fresh basil puree, citrus and Bacardi Rum 2 oz. with splash of soda

A taste of mama Vickie’s menu…


  • National Mexican Dish. They didn’t add any tomato or onions to this to give diners a smoother, creamier, and a richer texture

Shrimp Aguachile

  • a dish hailing from Sinaoloa Mexico
  • the shrimp is cooked in lime and jalapeno juices with a dash of shrimp salt, a tasty and refreshing Mexican-style ceviche


  • pork, beef, Mexican chorizo, onion tomato, and smoked chipotle along with a healthy dose of Vickie’s special seasoning.
  • From Puebla, Mexico

Tacos Gobernador

  • a creamy shrimp taco
  • They take onions, tomatoes and red and yellow bell peppers, mixed with chile ancho and cooked for three hours to bring out a full flavour. They add oaxaca cheese and melt it just a bit before serving
  • From Mazatian Mexico

The following tacos are off their main menu… 

Tofu Sofrito ($15.00 – Tacos 3 per order)

  •  Crispy cornmeal tofu in a sofrito sauce (smoky tomato and bell pepper)

Pollo Loco ($15.00 – Tacos 3 per order)

  • Chicken in adobo sauce and rice

As the restaurant prides itself with high-quality, authenticity, and traditional Mexican cuisine, it was evident when each of the courses were presented during the tasting. Highlights of the evening included the Shrimp Aguachile, which was incredibly light and refreshing to the palette. The generous portions of shrimp in this ceviche had a great spicy kick to it. Following the shrimp aguachile, was the Tinga. We were challenged to eat the tinga in the traditional way meaning that we had to eat it delicately without breaking  this dish! We carefully nibbled through this dish of seasoned protein whilst enjoying the contrast of some mashed up beans smothered across the shell. Last but not least, the dish that topped the tasting was the Tacos Gobernador. Something about the home made creamy sauce in the taco totally did it for me. Totally hit the spot.

I don’t think my photos did the Tacos Gobernader any justice. You might have to just go taste it yourself on either August 26 or 27, 2015 (or both days if you love Mexican food – like me!)
