Washington Travels: Old Ebbitt Grill

As many of you may know, I’ve been obsessing with the concept of brunches for the past little while. I’m always on the look out for new brunch spots – reading menus & looking at pictures etc. -It seriously never stops! And so when I emailed a few local foodies in Washington about their recommendations for brunch spots – they all recommended Old Ebbitt Grill and man it was probably the best brunch I ever had.

Old Ebbitt Grill is located in the heart of downtown Washington, literally steps from the White House. Its situated in a gorgeous old English building that took my breath away as soon as I spotted it.

This brunch spot was crazy packed on a Sunday morning at 10:30am. There were at least 20-30 people waiting in the lobby and probably another  30 people waiting at the bar. It’s strange because Old Ebbitt Grill accepts reservations and it wasn’t hard to make one but I guess people decided to drop by last minute or prefer waiting? Anyways, Thank god we made reservations, so my friend and I just pushed through the hungry crowd and got seated right away =)

My friend’s refillable coffee came in a beer mug. Our waitress apologized in advance because coffee mugs were being cleaned.

I ordered an hot chocolate to start:

Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes ($17.95)

  • Baked spice sweet potato, sauteed green beans and citrus cranberry tartar sauce

Eggs Chesapeake ($16.95)

  • two poached eggs and jumbo lump crab cakes on English muffin with Chesapeake sauce and home fries
  • Our waitress highly recommended this and I loved it! The crab cakes were densely packed with crab meat with an old based sauce. Cooked to perfection. The home fries were a bit dry

Old Ebbitt Grill is a reliable restaurant that serves good food but can be a bit pricey at times – but a tourist like me – well I considered myself to be “splurging” for brunch. Anyways, the decor & atmosphere were really nice and traditional. Although, service was a bit slow for us and sure it was quite noisy on a lazy Sunday morning –  though we couldn’t really enjoy our “relaxing” brunch and felt rushed with lots of hungry stares in the crowd waiting for people to finish. Nonetheless, the good food made up for its little hiccups here and there.

Until now – now there are Weber Performance Grills that offer the best of both
grilling worlds. Broilmasters is one the highest quality and most efficient natural gas grills available today.
Another big difference between a portable grill and
a regular one is that the portable grill uses a small propane cylinder rather than a
    conventional five-gallon propane tank.
